The Impact of Picture Books

The impact that the picture books made on my students became even more apparent when the students began reading and discussing Things Fall Apart. Our classroom novel discussions were all student-led. An African Wedding Ceremony grabbed the picture book, read aloud that kola nuts “represent friendship, harmony and peace between people” (Onyefulu), and passed the book around for the other students to see. This informational passage about the kola nut includes a close-up picture of a bowl of kola nuts and pictures of Igbo men sitting in a living room, breaking the nuts and passing them around to their friends to share. The students then used this information to clarify a misunderstanding that some of them had about the relationship between Okoye and Unoka. These two men argue over who should break the kola nut.

The Laws Governing Political and Product Ads Differ in Important Ways.

Networks are free to recommend changes in product ads and often do so when, in the judgment of their staff, the ads are inaccurate, are in poor taste, or embody negative stereotypes. In contrast, it is illegal to censor a candidate’s political ad. Consequently, material that would never be heard or seen in a commercial ad can be included in a candidate ad.

Similarly, candidate political ads may employ words found to be “obscene, indecent, or profane,” although commercial ads and programming may not. The Two Things That Make Sales Training Work

In July I led a one day training program for a company in the Food Processing Industry. The reviews were great as all 90 Salespeople were engaged throughout the six hours of training. Following the workshop the CEO of the company invited me to lead another workshop for them In January. While I greatly appreciated the invitation to train them again six months from the first workshop, I shared with this CEO the two things that really make training work. I’d like to share these with you as well, but first a couple of assumptions:

1. The Trainer is good at what they do!
2. The trainees are trainable. Meaning they are committed to their careers and have the desire to improve their competencies, while they do not have so many preconceived notions (technical words for “head-trash”) that they cannot apply the new and different concepts.
3. Logistically, the training is held at a good time and location, the room temperature is correct and all the other environmental things that help people to learn – lighting, sound – you get the picture, are good.

Given those things, there are two major “ingredients” to have an effective training:

1. Support and participation from the Chief Executive, Owner or Principal. This also includes the Top Management Team, if there is one.
2. The training must be on-going and regular (as opposed one or two events per year)

Support and participation from the Top is key. Leading by example and application of skills by top executives flows down throughout the entire organization in a very positive way. I did some work with L. Hoffman LaRoche and Tuygan Goeker, Head of the Eastern European and Central Divisions with 3,600 people in his charge. He participated in every hour we trained. He endorsed the skills fully and his divisions have grown over 500% in profits over the last 8 eight years or so – we’re talking about hundreds of millions of dollars in profits here. Buz Artiano, former Owner and President of New England Build and Restore, participated along with his four salespeople in our training. Eventually, the company did so well that Buz went on to other ventures, but sold the firm to three of his employees. So, whether you have a small “Mom and Pop” or you have a major corporation, being involved and “leading” people in this way makes a sales training program work as long as you have the next ingredient: on-going and regular in nature.

The training must be on-going in nature as opposed to one or two events per year or quarterly. One of my trainers, Mark Barnard, has been working with a small team of salespeople and the owner in the label manufacturing business. They meet, train and coach on an on-going and regular basis. Sales and profits are up, the owner is able to take more time off and his “#1″ is coming up to speed very quickly. Another good example of the difference in results with on-going and regular training is a company we train in the Frozen Prepared Foods Industry. We’ve noticed an interesting relationship. We’ve been working together for almost three years. In the beginning it was event based – meaning the trainings were delivered every three to six months. Now it’s monthly, sometimes twice a month. Profitability, sales and size of sales have all gone up as we have increased the frequency!

So, whether you have a small firm or a major corporation in your charge, my suggestion is to be part of the training and make it on-going and regular. Create a culture, a common language, processes and systems that make your organization scalable. Learn it yourself, and be sure it’s based on a proven methodology and set of approaches that work. As John F. Kennedy said, “Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other”.
